Previous Part: Part 1
With just three days until the first match at home to Leyton Orient, there’s not a lot of time for transfer business. Especially as I can’t find any players due to sacking the scouting department. But the loan for Colosimo is done in time. His versatility within the small squad will be invaluable. He could be first choice in 7 of the 11 positions, such is his superiority over the rest of the squad.
I’m going with the default 4-1-3-2 set-up. I’ll have a look 10-15 games in and see if any tweaks need to be made.
First choice right back, David Worrell misses this game through injury, so Colosimo plays there for this one. There is a 14 year-old centre back on the bench. Times are hard.
Oh it’s a bad game. The centre backs and David Friio play well, but I can’t figure out how the forwards got 8 ratings. Still, it’s a point.
A “pro” I forgot to mention; Plymouth are still in the FA Cup. An away tie for the second round at Notts County is next up. They’re 7th in Division 2, so this could be a short cup run.
Or, you know, not. Played well and deserved the win. With Worrell back, I expect that will be my settled first team. Unless my new scouts find a gem.
[Vans Trophy] Swansea 1-2 Plymouth (Williams (pen)/McGowan, Evans)
Despite playing the reserves, we stay in a competition I couldn’t care less about. But now, a problem. Wigan have purchased our on loan goalkeeper from Peterborough. Desperate attempts to grab Graham Stack, Paul Rachubka and Steve Simonsen on loan from the Premier League fail.
Luton 4-3 Plymouth (Garratt 2, Coyne, Nicholls/Evers 2, Stonebridge)
A great game and a fair result. The back-up ‘keeper isn’t at fault, but doesn’t excel either. Before the next match, I grab another goalie on loan, Paul Smith joining from Brentford.
Plymouth 4-0 Bristol Rovers (Evans, Friio, Evers, Colosimo)
A closer game than it appears, Paul Smith excellent on debut with a 9/10.
Plymouth 0-0 York
Plymouth 3-2 Darlington (Stonebridge 2, Scarlett/Bradshaw, Conlon)
And finally we make a player signing, Thorbjorn Sveinsson (STC) to provide competition up top. I’ve also completed my staff acquisitions.
Hartlepool 2-2 Plymouth (Housham, Clarke/Colosimo, Taylor)
And that brings us into the new year, and a home tie in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with First Division Norwich the opponents. It’s been a better than expected start, and we’re up to 17th in the league. From 12th to 23rd, it’s pretty close, but it’ll probably be difficult to break out of that range.
