CM0102: Plymouth Argyle: Part 6 – Mixed bag

Restrictions: Can only sign players who are transfer listed, loan listed or found by scouts.

Previous Parts: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

I’m don’t know how I feel about the squad. It feels like it has more depth to it, but I’m not sure that I’ve improved the first XI much. Hopefully Barrett and Proietti will class-up the midfield, and Thomson will satisfactorily replace Colosimo.

The new teams arriving in Division 3 are; Dagenham and Redbridge, up from the Conference, and Bournemouth, Colchester, Bury and Oldham, relegated from Division 2.

Torquay 1-1 Plymouth (Wilson/McGlinchey)

Bloody Torquay.

Plymouth 2-0 Yor(Edwards, Forbes)

[League Cup] Plymouth 4-0 Torquay (Proietti 2 (1 pen), Coughlan, Edwards)

Rushden 3-3 Plymouth (Lucas, Darby, Connaghan/Gibson, Edwards, Stonebridge)

Surely not a great sign that it took until the 331st minute of the season for a striker to score…

Plymouth 2-1 Rochdale (Martin, Stonebridge/McLaughlin)

Marcus Martin (AMRC) was in the reserves last season. He seems to have progressed a bit down there, so at age 18, will get some chances to impress for the first team.

Plymouth 3-1 Carlisle (Thomson, McHugh 2/Foran)

We were by far the better team, but it took until the last few minutes to grab the lead.

Kidderminster 3-1 Plymouth (Clitheroe, Coppinger, Shilton/Smyth)

A completely inexplicable result. We were on top throughout. They scored 2 goals in 3 minutes at the end of the first half, and we couldn’t hit a barn door.

Plymouth 0-2 Colchester (Flynn, Sullivan)

We were total, total crap. Probably the worst performance since I took over.

Southend 2-3 Plymouth (Whelan, Thomas/Barrett, Stonebridge, Coughlan)

The League Cup Third Round is next, and we head to Barnsley…

Textbook infuriating Champ result, from an even contest. It’s taken 11 games for Paul Smith to completely lose my trust. And he’s only played 4 of them…

Plymouth 5-2 Darlington (Stonebridge 2, McHugh 2, Coughlan/Betts, Bochenski)

I’m desperate to reduce the goals conceded. There’s only a handful of defences worse than ours in the entire division, and it was a similar story last season. So we throw £100k at Millwall for Tony Warner (GK), after every possible loan option in the top two divisions tells me to sod right off.

And for the first time, a scout spots a youngster with potential gem-like status. Nicky Rowe (DL) looks like a good prospect.

Cheltenham 1-1 Plymouth (Mainwaring/Proietti)

We were bad, but Tony Warner gets man of the match on his debut to earn us a point. Adrian Forbes is sent off in the closing stages for a brutal headbutt on Jamie Victory. For no reason. Dick move.

Best signings so far: Proietti, Thomson, McHugh.

Worst signings so far: Smith, Gibson (averaging less than 6.5), Barrett (who has yet to complete 90 minutes…).

At the end of September, we’re in contention. I have some concerns. All of the new defenders have been a bit naff. Paul Barrett is constantly injured or knackered. No-one will join on loan. The league is really tight. But we’re in with a chance…
